David Batchelor

Biography of David William Batchelor

As a composer, Dr. David William Batchelor (DMA, University of South Carolina, 2015) draws influences from Aaron Jay Kernis (1960–present), György Ligeti (1923-2006), Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). He incorporates large-scale harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic structures in his music, ensures ease of performance relative to each player or singer, and exhibits exceptional precision and clarity in the notation of his scores.

David has enjoyed the friendship of many performers and conductors. His relationships with them have done more for his career than any single effort of his own. One such friend, Nové Deypalan, an immigrant conductor from the Philippines, took Batchelor’s music to Los Angeles, California in 2012, and Rome, Italy in 2013.

In addition to composing and teaching, David pursues entrepreneurial opportunities. During his time at USC, he acted as the first Artistic Director of Columbia’s take on the Classical Revolution. He also served on the board of directors for the student-run new music performance machine Cica, and later as the Founding Artistic Director of the Columbia Schubertiads, bringing live performances of classical music into people's living rooms where children are especially welcome.
